Conflict Cornucopia blog reviews Patrol Angis

Patrol Angis has been released now for a number of weeks and hundreds of copies of the fantastic power packed A5 book have winged their way around the world.  One person who had received their copy and has a lot to say about it is Chris Walkley who runs the Conflict Cornucopia blog.  He has posted up an in depth review covering the book itself as well as the background, the core mechanics, force organisation and his own considered thoughts.  Its a really good read and deftly explains why he likes The Ion Age so much. You can read his post on his blog HERE.

If you are keen on Patrol Angis you can purchase it as a book or a game pack with miniatures.  Go HERE. Either way it comes with the unique Knight Errant 15mm miniature that you can only get with it and of course the current monthly free miniature too.  Excellent!

Thanks for Reading.

Photos from the Planetary Militia PDF full size

Thank to everyone who has downloaded the free four page PDF on using our Planetary Militia miniatures in the Patrol Angis rules system.  Go along to our website to download it and other free files for Patrol Angis.  Enjoy!

I have had a fair number of emails and pings from IonFans over the weekend thanking me for taking the time to not only make up this PDF but to give it away free.  I am happy to have done so.  But one other common thread came up in these comments and that was a desire to see the images from the PDF in full.  These images were taken during our own internal playtesting of the rules and stats in the PDF (also in the forthcoming Shia Khan free material) and depict a rolling conflict.  I thought sure why not and this posting is the result.  I present to you in order from one to eight the images each with a short caption.  Please note this is not an After Action Report (AAR) and the images were taken almost all during one turn.

Planetary Militia in Patrol Angis free PDF download

Across the entire Prydian Precinct there are Planetary Militias otherwise known as Planetary Defence Forces. Each of these forces its own local designation and name but every one of them is known to the precinct as a whole by their home planet and numerical designation in the case that the star system has more than one inhabited world. Their primary role and in most cases only role is to defend their world against invasion and occupation. This they must sometimes do alone or more often with the bolstering aid of Muster and or Retained Knights from the controlling interest of that world; a Marcher Baron or the Prydian Army. Planetary forces owe their loyalty to the Marcher Baron who controls that world. In terms of numerical size the largest Planetary Militias number in the hundreds of millions on worlds such as Yordan Prime down to the smallest which number only in the dozens on foundling colonies. There is an emphasis among intra atmosphere defence forces on armour and equipment that has the smallest amount of maintenance and requires minimal training. As a result they make up for in numbers what they lack in skill against superior forces. Ease of use wins out over higher effectiveness. Often armaments are purchased or fabricated on mass by the Prydian Army or the local Marcher Baron and are based on the widely used Moth and Anvil families of weapons with additional simpler systems. Mark III Aketon non powered armour (a lower cost version of Muster Aketon MkIV armour) is the typical protection for defence forces with adaptations to local environmental conditions. These range from the closed helm and breather systems of the massive Bosworth ark cities to the bare headed and thin plates of an agri-world for standard Aketon to Cold Climes that are deployed in frozen conditions and Hot Climes in desert conditions. There are also localised space equipped troopers who protect off world outposts and moon bases. See other training series for information on Planetary Militia platoon structure, Steornede Battlesuits, Amber Portable Weapon Platforms, Amber Quad Bikes, Grima Robot Troopers and Magog GNATS. Training series searches for Colabreta and Hazelwurm along with Verticopters will provide vehicle information. All banner command level soldiers and knights must have operation knowledge of local system Planetary Militias.

Now is the time! Thanks for all your emails and comments looking forward to this free expansion PDF and today is the day. The Ion Age is happy to present The Planetary Militia in Patrol Angis as a four page PDF which contains fiction, statistics, tables, rank structure and optional test rules along with some photos of our play testing of the rules using the miniatures. You will need the Patrol Angis book but aside from that all you need is in the PDF.

You can download the free PDF from our Dropbox account by clicking on this link HERE. Enjoy!

We will be expanding the codes in the Planetary Militia part of our 15mm range in the future but not for a good while as we are now moving on to an expansion of the Retained ranks which you will be learning about in the early days of July. As it stands you have all you need for infantry based skirmish with the PM as we call them. Troopers, Command, Support, Portable Weapon and Battlesuits. I do recommend the IAFP07 Planetary Militia Platoon as it represents best value and you get a unique to that code sniper miniature free as well.  Also the Steornede Battlesuit is cool!

I hope you enjoy this PDF and if you have questions or feedback please do make contact with us.

Thanks for Reading.

Unboxing Patrol Angis Game Pack - Insane Gentlemans Club

This morning I got an email from Adam a member of the Insane Gentlemans Club a wargaming club based in Bridgwater in the UK. He and his club are fans of The Ion Age and among a number of planned articles for their interest in us they have put online a detailed 'unboxing' post on their web pages.  You can visit and read it HERE.

Its a very honest and heartfelt article and I enjoyed reading it.  The pictures above are taken from the unboxing.  Adam makes many points about the book, its quality, the artwork and the setting along with comments on the miniatures and bases and the free items.  He also speaks of the level of customer service that he experienced last month when he placed the order and asked questions.  I enjoy speaking to wargamers and to share their happiness at getting involved with The Ion Age so it was nothing out of the ordinary for me but its nice to have it mentioned.  If you want to speak to me then email me and ask your questions to info@theionage.com.  Enjoy the review!

You can find Patrol Angis as a book and a game pack on our website HERE.  There is a unique miniature with this book and of course you also get the currently monthly miniature (IMP22 Malig Campaigner) free with your package as well.  There is a link on the page to download the free files folder as well.

Well done Adam and the rest of the IGC!

Thanks for Reading.

IAF073 Amber Portable Weapon (6 Variants) and IAF074 PM Gun Crew released!

The Hazelwurm Patrol Car skidded to a halt its right rear tyre shredded by 9.6mm Maia mpi rounds but its precious cargo of troopers safe in its lightly armoured body and the Amber portable weapon it was towing safe also from the withered fire of the Maligs.  As quickly as they could the troopers climbed out of their seats and dived for the rear of the patrol car to uncouple the portable weapon.

Bullets whined and ricocheted from the Hazerlwurm as another patrol car pulled up at the intersection and a fire-team of troopers got out and from behind their car began to lay down rifle fire to keep Goblins busy.  It worked and the bullet strikes began to focus upon the second Hazelwurm giving the gunners time to get their weapon into a good position from there it could be remotely operated from behind the vehicle's cover.

Their Amber was a stubby twin barrelled Moth 88 cannon perfect for infantry suppression and through their helmet arrays the gunners tracked the sights of the gun onto the Maligs across the intersection.  Maligs were vicious killers but they were not the smartest soldiers of the Khanate Empire and as the Moth 88 opened up with a roaring echo like a giant tearing sheet metal to strips they died.  The swarming bullets of the Moth 88 literally tore the Goblins to pieces and left them little more than a smear on the rubbacrete.

As quickly as they had arrived the gunners turned their Amber platform and hitched it once more to the back of the damaged Hazelwurm.  With a tire gone the patrol car would be slowed but it did not matter.  Pelcan City was falling to the enemy and the next fight was only a street away....
Pelcan City, Camarthen Prime, 4334IC

Following up on the excellent IAF071 Planetary Militia 3rd Squad last week we present the rest of our releases for June 2015.  There will be no more releases before July.  The Planetary Militia get their own portable weapon in the Amber and gunners to operate it.  With six variants and a wheeled chassis and tow hook it can be moved with ease on low tech worlds and behind your vehicles such as the Hazelwurm.  Read on for more details!

IAF073 Amber Portable Weapon - 6 Variants
The Amber is a portable weapon platform on two wheels which acts as support for infantry. The core pieces are the two wheeled stand, the housing block and the gun shield as well as a tow bar piece to attach to any Ion Age vehicle. These are the same in all variants and onto this is mounted one weapon. The options are Moth 88 twin long barrelled cannon (A), Moth 88 rotary cannon (B), Angis AP Cannon (C), Bodkin Howizter (D), Valerin Laser Cannon (E) and the Fretan Rail Gun (F). Weapons mount one of two ways with the gun shield fitted over them or around them.  This weapon system is a brother to the Espaten protable weapon used by the Retained and Muster in battle.

Here is an image which shows all of the parts which are used to make up one and all variants of the Amber Portable Weapon platform.

Here is a picture of the tow bar as it is to be used on any of The Ion Age vehicles but especially the Planetary Militia ones.

Each pack contains one portable weapon kit and you can choose your variant on the website in a great drop down menu. As always these variant codes can be bought as a pack or select the three packs and save 10% option on the page. Go HERE. Price per pack 3.00GBP

IAF074 Planetary Militia Amber Crew
This pack contains two 15mm scale white metal miniatures in different poses. Two Planetary Militia Troopers with the first arm raised checking ranges and the second with the remote control box for the Amber Portable Weapon. Combine these portable weapon crew miniatures with the IAF073 Amber Portable Weapon or the IAF064 Espaten Portable Weapon Platforms. Go HERE. As always this code can be bought as a pack or as single miniatures or select the three packs and save 10% option on the page. Price 1.00GBP per pack.

First Look: Patrol Angis Troop Element Trays coming July

As at the time of going to virtual press I have been asked by over a hundred IonFans about 'Troop Element Movement Trays' for use in Patrol Angis.  These trays hold multiple miniatures such as a whole Fire-Team or a whole Squad meaning its easier to move them around the gaming table during play.  While not vital to play and not the most sexy product we have designed (remember the Infernus Malig Ball Tank!) we wanted to create something that looked and felt good in your hands and held the 20mm and 30mm round bases used in the game with ease.

We have the designs completed and are in the process of putting them into production molds for resin casting.  I think we have succeeded in our ambition.

We will be releasing movement trays in July 2015 and the sizes and shapes will be taken from the Patrol Angis book on the page you can see above.  They will be excellent value and have texture surfaces that will blend with your gaming table.

We will also be releasing packs of the resin bases used in the trays and on our painted miniatures on our web pages.  These will be 20mm Round and 30mm Round sizes.

There will be a full announcement next month at release time but I hope you have enjoyed this short blog post and if you are a player of Patrol Angis and have an idea for a new pack or product for the game please do contact us on info@theionage.com.

IAF071 Planetary Militia 3rd Squad released!

The once shining tower block that contained the headquarters of Maudlin in down town Pelcan City had seen better days.  Days when Camarthen Prime had been a planet with a promising future and a small archaeological dig into possible alien ruins had held little interest for the population at large.  Sergeant Jack Fallon wish for those simpler times to return once more as he gazed out of a shattered golglass panel on this eight floor of the block.  Below he could see smashed vehicles and dead bodies laying like litter on the no longer pristine rubbacrete boulevard.  Fallon could also see movement among the debris and corpses.  Movement that was coming towards the burned out entrance way to the block.  Several groups of verminous aliens which they had come to call 'Maligs'.  Green skinned and vicious they were scouring every building as further down the boulevard a column of other larger red uniformed aliens advanced.  The sergeant spat out of the broken window and turned to his squad who were in the room behind him.

“Looks like were gonna have company soon.  Maligs coming up the stairwells in thirty seconds.  Traps not gonna spring for us.  We will have to fight our way out onto the roof and comm for evac.”

Almost as one the other nine soldiers of the squad nodded in agreement and readied their weapons.  They had been awaiting the opportunity to  detonate a hidden Koloa Type 4 mine that was inside a wreaked grav skimmer further up the boulevard that would have decimated the column of aliens.  But that was going to be wasted now as ordered to preserve their lives over rode killing the foe.   A quick fire fight with the Maligs and then up to the roof.  Perhaps the Koloa could be detonated as they were lifted off.

With a practised ease Fallon hefted his Urgan 13 Combat Shotgun.  Issued only to planetary defence forces the shotgun was meant for raw recruits and for those in pacification roles but the sergeant adored the weapon and had refused the Moth Type 6 Rifle offered to him by command.  The Urgan 13 could fire a variety of loads from a blast round that scattered lethal pellets to an armour piercing solid round and a non-lethal gas round. Not much call for crowd control these days and almost all of his carried rounds were 18mm solids that had no spread but would turn a Malig into meat paste.  The squad moved towards the door as the sound of running foot steps approached from below.
Sergeant Jack Fallon, Pelcan City, Camarthen Prime, 4334IC

With the excitement of the release of Patrol Angis now behind us we are back to releasing awesome 15mm miniatures for your collection.  We are expanding the Planetary Militia again this month with a new squad that fits right in with the existing infantry as well as the popular Steornede Battlesuits and the Hazelwurm and Colobreta vehicles from earlier this year.  Read on!

Patrol Angis released!

Following up on our pre-order offer I am delighted to be able to announce the general release of our first 15mm wargame title in a planned series Patrol Angis.  Core wargame rules for skirmish wargaming during the Prydian Civil War with infantry, bikes, battlesuits and portable weapons. Every copy of the book or game set comes with a unique Knight Errant miniature automatically (you also get the monthly free miniature as well!  Currently IMP22 Malig Campaigner worth 0.60GBP) worth 0.60GBP.  You can see Patrol Angis on our website on the 15mm Publications page.  Here is some information about this title:

15MM SKIRMISH WARGAME RULES SET IN THE ION AGE

Wargame rules for use with 15mm miniatures and models from theionage.com. An enjoyable playing experience in a space opera setting unlike any other. Tactically challenging but not complex, these rules reward players for their playing and not by the use of endless charts, tables and over powered characters. Once familiar with the game rules, in a single hour you can play a full game with another person or several or on your own in solo play. The rules will not take long to learn and are suitable for wargamers of all ages from novice to veteran. They are fun and can be expanded into other titles in the series.

Patrol Angis is a skirmish level of wargame which means it typically has between a dozen and about forty 15mm scale miniatures a side in play during a game. It works well with more but those amounts are ideal. Most games have one Platoon sized force per player and have one or two or maybe even three players. A Platoon or Lance which contains typically twenty two (22) miniatures. In Patrol Angis you play either as the Prydian Army in its quest to reclaim worlds lost to the Marcher Barons during the Civil War or you can play in the employ of Canlaster or Yordist or any of the other dozen smaller array of Marcher Barons. This includes playing as a “Conda”' or paid professional mercenary for any side.

This is low intensity warfare title where troops mainly on foot, root each other out over small objectives. It’s not massive, not often glamorous, but it’s pure adventure, it’s the stuff of heroes and it’s skirmishing at its best! Easy to get into and to build upon. It’s the starting point for your wargaming in The Ion Age!

In the book you will find the full skirmishing rules along with solo play, part one of the Prydian Civil War background, game tables and statistics, troops and armoury of the Civil War, the Dando II Campaign and three introductory scenarios set within it and an article on just what is The Ion Age.  A lot to read in a packed sixty four pages!

As well as a packed book you can purchase for wargaming we also offer Patrol Angis as a boxed set with two forces of miniatures to get you started and to play out the starter scenarios.  Here is what is contained in the Game Pack and if you take the time to total it up compared to retail price you will see its a deal.

Lance 1 (Prydian Army)
IAF001 Retained Post Alpha (10)
IAF002 Retained Post Beta (10)
IAF005 Balthazar and Jermone (2)
(Unique Knight Errant with Pistol)

Lance 2 (League of Yordan)

IAF030D Duxis Battlesuit (Moth 88) (1)
IAF030E Duxis Battlesuit (Valerin) (1)

IAF046A Espaten Platform (Moth Long barrel) (1)
IAF066 Grav Platform Propulsion Unit (1)
IAF055 Retained Espaten Crew (2)

The miniatures in the game pack are all supplied with our round resin bases as used in all our photographs of miniatures.  Extra Value!

IMP22 Space Goblin Malig Campaigner free miniature for June 2015!

May is done and as the Drill Sergeant free miniature retreats into the gloom (until late this summer when the Year Two Collection comes out!) and with hundreds of them winging across the world in Patrol Angis packages we welcome June with this month's free monthly miniature.  Its IMP22 Malig Campaigner and its June 2015's free 15mm scale miniature for the month!  This miniature is automatically put into every order at the rate of one per order regardless of order value.  It can also be bought in any amount on the monthly IMP page of the website for this month only too before being withdrawn on the first of next month.  It will be one of the twelve in the 'Year Two Collection' on our second anniversary in two months time.

Following up on the popular miniature for June last year the Malig Tank Ace, pilot of the Infernus (who would volunteer for that suicide mission..why only a Space Goblin of course!) we have another speciality Malig for your collection.  The campaigner fits in well with any of the Malig Tesserans we have as a trooper or with higher command or baggage as well.  You can fit it to many roles.  As you can see the Malig Campaigner is uniformed as a typical trooper but upon his vastly overloaded back he has a great mound of equipment.  A Maia 9.6mm mpi along with rope, sacks, pouches and more. Vital stuff or just the dirty laundry of his whole Ordos (platoon).  This miniature is in one piece and stands 17mm tall (to top of baggage).  If you are interested in the Maligs and the Shia Khan Empire you can see them all HERE.

Of course you earn reward points on all orders too through your account.  We realise that some of you may wish to purchase the currently free miniature to get multiples of it without placing a lot of orders so you can do just that.  Visit this page on the website for the miniature at a fair price for a special miniature.  There is a growing page on the Ion Age website where the current and all former IMP series free miniatures are shown so that you can see what came before.  Enjoy and go HERE

As it is our second year we look back at this time last year and see what the free miniature was at that time.  In June 2015 the free miniature was IMP10 Malig Tank Ace. It was our tenth miniature to be given out free.  You can find this miniature in the Year One Collection if you are lacking it.

May was great for us and for me personally.  We had a much bigger uptake on the Patrol Angis book and game pack than we expected.  Packages are on their way starting today all across the globe containing the awesome and we all hope you enjoy this first title in the series for 15mm gaming.  Its the biggest title ever for the Ion Age in terms of word count and you can see it HERE as its now on general release.  There is more excellence coming to support not only the miniatures you already have but also to expand the Prydian Precinct Army for skirmish too this month.

Thanks for reading.
