Patrol Angis AAR Arcticon 2019 plus free Portable Castle PDF downloads

My thanks to Aris Kolehmainen and the team at Arcticon 2019 over in the United States for putting on a first class 15mm science fiction convention and allowing The Ion Age to sponsor the event too.  It is my pleasure to present the After Action Report (AAR) for the Patrol Angis event on the day.  It is complete with images and all details.  Also as a special treat we have game statistics for and free downloads of the paper model huge Portable Castle vehicles used at the convention.  Enjoy!  GBS

This is an AAR of the Final Game of the Patrol: Angis 2nd Annual Tournament held at ArctiCon 2019. ArctiCon is a charity gaming event in Merriville, Indiana (USA). This year, proceeds from the event culminated in over $4000 to support military veterans.

Scenario:

Prydian Army – In spite of the best efforts of the Prydian forces, it appears that the Shia Khan have managed to access one of the once thought lost Damascus Portable Castle “Vigilance”. Inside it’s broken and overgrown hull are a score of artefacts recovered from the Dolos Cloud by the Starvaulters. Artefacts that could drastically aid the Prydians in their effort to repel the Khanate empire.

Khanate – Generally speaking, there is little the humans possess that the Khanate covet. Their armour is clunky, their weapons crude, their battlesuits inelegant. However, they do have a knack for discovering things long thought lost to time. In this case, a Proauctor Metaborg, long dormant and in near pristine order. Should it fall into the hands of humanity, it might cause a problem in the future.

Win Conditions:

Prydia (Dave) – Have a Troop Element inside the Portable Castle by the end of Turn 6. This will give reinforcements time to vector in on the location of the Vigilance.
Khanate (Aris) – Prevent the enemy from occupying the Portable Castle, doing so will allow for an extraction of the Proauctor before the humans can reach it.

Scenario Special:

Open the Hanger – A troop element inside the Portable Castle may use an action to open the hanger doors. This is the ONLY way for ISV’s to enter the Portable Castle

Fire Missiles, (hopefully…) – The Anda Missile pod appears to possibly be in working order. Any Troop Element within the castle may spend an action to attempt to fire the Anda pod. This pod may fire indirectly, as if it had a spotter on the target element within range.

When you spend your activation token to fire the missile roll 1D8:

1-4: There is a malfunction, the missiles fire straight up in the air before crashing down on the castle. All Elements in or on the castle take an Anda Missile attack (roll for hits and kills as normal).
Note: No matter who one initiative, each player chooses their own casualties for this attack.

5-8: The pod fires normally, treat this as an Anda Missile Pod attack that has a Spotter for IF.

Turn 1: Aris questions his life choices.
Aris set up his troops in a gamble so that if he won initiative, he would be able to drop an overwatch on his Legionary Support troops sitting on the Battlement platform with their Atomic Destabilizers, allowing him to snipe at the large Prydian element that would be coming up though the woods on the western side of the board.

Aris did NOT win initiative.

Dave opened the game with a solid round of fire, quickly reaping the entire Support element. Aris opt to spend the two activation tokens he had given the squad to save two of them. Dave would follow this up on his next turn by firing an extremely well-placed shot from his Desteria just pasted the edge of one rocky hill, and inside the edge of Castle’s missile pod on the eastern flank, killing the Khanate force commander’s element. Worse still for Aris, his Psychoborgs were A.I. Slaved, which meant they were effectively dead for the rest of the game.

By the end of Turn 1, Dave had successfully taken out 6 Legionaries, 2 man Command Element, and 3 Psychoborgs.

Turn 2: The Pompous Doctrine
Lord Pompous once said “If you’re going to fist’em, fist’em GRATUITOUSLY!”

After much debate in the highest chambers if military thought, it was generally agreed he was speaking of his well known prowess in close combat. This would later be refined to “if you must enter close combat, strike without mercy”, this is also known as The Pompous Doctrine.

Dave showed a prime example of this at work.

Dave’s Duxis with Assaulter and Brawler entered into close combat with Aris’s Legionnaire troop element, resulting in 27 kills on an 8 man element. There were no survivors.

Things were getting dicey for Aris, so he opt to put his future in the hands of dice. Inside the portable castle was an element of Pioneers. The shock troops of the Khanate empire. With one activation token, they activated the Anda pod. Aris targeted the Retained knights that were threatening the western flank, and rolled his dice.

The dice came up as a 5, barely a success, but Aris was not going to complain about this long overdue luck. The pod fires, taking out half of the Retained knights, and locking them down on a failed moral check. Little victories for the Khanate, but this was far from over.

Turn 3: Here there be Giants
Dave had read about Warlords. He knew they were big, he knew they were a match for Duxis, but he had never experienced fighting one yet. Dave’s Desteria were about to experience these giants of the battlefield first hand.

Dave moved his Desteria though the woods into a forward position, he had a few things going for him. First, he was in cover, that +3 would be good to him. Second, They were Desteria, their armour was solid as one could hope for. However, he moved them into the range of warlords sitting in Overwatch, and Hell itself fell upon the brave Desteria.

Shots from Mars, Helios, and Juno cannons were nearly suppressed by their armour but it still took Ablative Armour, all the activation tokens, and the luck of having won initiative to save what little remained of the element.

Turn 4: The Siege Begins
Turn 4 saw the formation of the late game linchpins. The Warlords were single handedly holding the entire eastern flank, while the Duxis and the remnants of the Retained element moved to get closer to the castle.

Eventually the Prydian forces in the west made a hard move to press the Castle wall, not quite able to enter it, but preparing themselves for the fight. Aris opt at this time to pull his full, untouched, element of Pioneers to the battlements, and began raining down Maia rounds down upon the Retained. This would further thin the number of Retained to a mere two; and take out almost all of the Pioneers in the process.

The turn would end with the Prydian force commander deep in the woods, Warlords sitting in overwatch, and all that remained of both forces hugging the wall of the castle in a back and forth firefight.

Turn 5: Lords of War
Dave had to place all his bets one one big play: Get the Retained inside, open the hanger doors, and get the Duxis inside and clean house. It was a suicide mission for the two remaining Retained, however, it was his best shot to win the day. The slug fest had hit him hard, but his Duxis was unharmed, and as hard as he had been hit, Aris had been hit even harder.

With initiative won, Dave moved his Retained into the castle and activated the hanger door. Aris would reply by having the pioneers kill the intruders to little fanfare. With a grand total of 4 Khanate troops in/on the castle, Dave made his move. The Duxis charged towards the open hanger…

… and into the line of fire from the warlords waiting for him.

With inhuman roars the Warlords lived up to their name. The Duxis stood no chance against the onslaught of energies and ballistics being thrown at them, and like a tragic hero of old, it and its pilot died at the brink of it’s goal. The force commander of the Prydian forces then decided to make a strategic withdraw. There could be no victory here today, the Pryidan forces had fallen, and whatever treasures may have been within the ancient hold of the Vigilant, would fall to the hands of the Khanate Empire.

Khanate Victory!!!!

The Aftermath

This was one hell of a game. The combat was intense, the plays were thoughtful, and the line that separated Victory and Defeat has never been thinner. Just look at what was LEFT at the end of the game:

Dave would walk away from the event with a brand new, fresh off the factory floor, Laan type Magog, as well as a complementary line of his very own set of Happy Burger Bots from our wonderful sponsors at Happy Burger.

Remember: Happy Burger is the Fasted Food in the Universe! I look forward to another exciting event next year, and hope to see you guys there!

Want to field your own portable castle? Here are some game statistics to get you to the battlefield in early Prydian style:

As you have seen in the pictures the portable castle was on the table and so here are the links to download for free (just click and save to your device) the PORTABLE CASTLE and a DAMAGED PORTABLE CASTLE.

We hope you enjoyed reading this as much as we did playing Patrol Angis. I’ve been playing competitively one war game or another since I was sixteen and this was the most brutal, bloody, nail biting, and most importantly: fun game I have played to date.

Percival Sparkletrout mixes it up with Battlesuit conversion

I was delighted to see the end result of a great conversion process that 15mm science fiction wargaming fan Percival Sparkletrout showed off two weeks ago and he kindly gave permission for us to share the results on our blog too. What does happen with you take the arms and tri-barrel gun of the Jade Ape Battlesuit and mount them on the body of a Steornede Battlesuit? Now we know. It is awesome!

Painted up in a fetching deep orange and black scheme with hazard stripes and a white pilots front hatch the conversion looks menacing with its long arms and hands rather than the typical twin cannons or twin missile pods. The idea was a battlesuit as an armoured and armed power loader (part fighter part factory worker) so that the civilian population had some muscle when the Shia Khan or any other Xenos invade their cities. I was told that a little modelling was required for the conversion but it was not a lot. Some carving to widen the sockets for the arms into the resin body of the Steornede and the drilling of a small hole into the top of the battlesuit to mount the three barrelled gun. It has occurred to myself and others that you could do this conversion the other way around and take the body of the Jade Ape Battlesuit and mount the twin Anda Missile Pods or twin Moth Cannons onto it from the Steornede kit. I have not seen this but I have tried it loosely with the parts and it looks good and works well.

IAF118 Jade Ape Battlesuit
The Sanbao or Trade Fleet Soldiers of the Xin Hegemony operate Battlesuits in fire-teams of three or singly. This pack contains one multiple part 15mm white metal and resin battlesuit miniature. The Guaiwu II or 'Jade Ape' has twin duties of battle and cargo handling with massive upper body strength. It has a shoulder mounted three barrelled heavy Gonglu support blaster. A big brother for your Sanbao trade fleet soldiers. The miniature is supplied in four pieces and is easy to assemble. The arms may be mounted in varied poses, low, medium or high. Assembled the miniature is 35mm tall to top of body. See it HERE

IAF072 Steornede Battlesuit
The defence forces of the Prydian Precinct have their own battlesuit to put them on an equal footing with those who would invade or insurrection their homes. The Steornede is that battlesuit in two variants. This code comprises a highly detailed 15mm scale miniature which is approx 30mm tall supplied as a one piece resin body and two separate white metal arms mounting Anda 60mm missile pods (IAF072A) or Moth 88 Cannons (IAF072B). Suitable for use in many different settings it is excellent back up for your infantry. See it HERE

If you enjoyed this conversion article and would like to try out your own conversions of these battlesuits then you can! If you place an order which includes either of these battlesuits in any quantity and you wish to get different arms just send an email to info@theionage.com titled with your order number and tell us which arms you would like with the battlesuit you ordered. The Arms of the Jade Ape, the Twin Cannons or the Twin Missile Pods. We will then supply the chosen arms with the ordered battlesuit at no extra cost. We would enjoy seeing the painted results too!

We will make our last release of the month later this week. The whole platoon of Muster Patrol including the new all female squad and extra free unique miniature in the platoon pack. Watch out for this!

Five different 15mm scale Adder Tankettes now released

Welcome to our first releases for the month of October 2018!  We will have a further release at months end but now it is the turn of the smallest tracked vehicles in the Prydian Precinct the Adder Combat Tankettes.  Go HERE or read on for more and links to free resources too.

As the second Khanate War continued and worlds fell to the Legions as they spread ever further from the Matter Gateway in the Camarthen stellar system the threat to the entire Prydian Precinct grew dire. The Marcher Barons were in retreat and the Prydian Army in ascendency after twenty years of civil war but this did not mean that the military might of the Throne was enough.  Split between dealing with the growing alien invasion and the struggle for dominance in the core systems this resulted in neither war being tackled fully.  In 4340 IC the death of the Kingmaker Nevall in battle against Princess Cyon meant the Precinct was once more at peace with only small scale conflicts left to stamp out.  The loss of most of Knight General Obermann's fleet in 4331 IC on and around Camarthen Prime had meant near a decade of hit and run campaigns against the Dragon Ships as they sail in darkness out across the stellar cluster. While Humanity was able to deal with a single Dragon Ship entering a planetary orbit this was not the case as pairs and then trios and more of these mighty warships, each carrying an entire Legion, began to appear together.  It would take several years to gather enough might to tackle the Matter Gateway head on so for the moment single regiments were dispatched to hold and harry as best they could.

The clamour for Taranis and Magogs was constantly coming back to New Glastonbury and in such numbers that the demand could not be met.  It takes a lot of time and resources to build the mightiest war machines so a solution was looked for to supply the Camarthen Cluster with armoured vehicles for the use of Muster and Planetary Militia in huge numbers.  Part of this was the Mullo Type 36 AFV as well as the existing Adder light vehicles but a new modular assembly was founded in 4336 IC with the creation of the Adder Combat Tankettes. A stop gap measure to combat Khanate Orbs and tanks. These tracked vehicles have a weight of just over seven and a half tons and roughly eighteen feet in length that Adder is not a combat heavy weight like the Taranis.  A colour coding system is in use to make Adders easy to assign to Regiments and to allow Planetary Militia who are not be as used to war as a Retained Knight a simple recognition method.  The Red Adder Tankette is the standard model mounting a turret with a Moth 88 Rotary Cannon.  The Yellow Adder is  the fire support variant and has two crew along with a turret with an Anda 60mm Missile Pod.  The Black Adder acts as an armoured punch giving the Muster the ability to knock out battlesuits and other smaller tough targets with two crew and a turret mounted Fretan Rail Gun.  Less common is the Orange Adder which is infantry support mounting a specialised turret with a Moth 30 automatic 50mm Grenade Launcher.  Dedicated Adders include the Green Adder which is a command and control car at the battalion level and the White Adder for medical teams and battlefield triage.  The 'Battle Taxi' type Grey Adder is heavily modified and can carry two fire-teams or a squad at a real squeeze.  There are also some very specialised Adders too for purposes such as Blue Adder, the Brown Adder and the Purple Adder.
Academy Auto-Trainer Series 52, New Glastonbury, 4342 IC.

The Adder Combat Tankette is the third propulsion type of Adder which we have created.  You can see all of the Wheeled and Lifter (Hover) Adders on the website HERE.  The Adder is a work horse and fits in well with any 15mm near future or further ahead science fiction army.  We also have top down scale comparison photos with other vehicles in our 15mm range which you can see HERE.  Here are the new five and thanks to everyone for their support with the pre-orders.

The third new release will appear around the 24th May and it is a cracker.  As you can tell we are on a bit of a floating theme this month and it all leads here.  We will have a brand new 2.0 version of the IAF080 SuperBlue Adder!  A heavily armoured repulsar Adder variant of light vehicle which is a dedicated hunter killer armed with a Valerin Laser Cannon.  Sam Croes is finalising it now and it is looking excellent.

Thank you as always for your support with our little space opera brand.  We work hard and we make quality miniatures to continue to expand this sci-fi universe that you all so enjoy.

You have been most patient with us while we finished the thirty three poses of 15mm space werewolves and now the time is here.  Following up on the three Tesserans of right from earlier this year we present to you all of our February 2018 releases with IAF155 Beotan 1st Tesseran (Juno Rifle) and IAFP12 Beotan Ordos (platoon pack).  Core infantry and the whole force for the savage cold climes warriors of the Shia Khan Empire.  Sculpted by Sam Croes.  Go HERE or read on for more information.  We are here with more space opera awesome!

“Who would have thought that out here in the darkness, in the vastness of space, that creatures of our long gone ancestors nightmares would turn out to be real.  I never did but then I have seen a lot since arriving in the Camarthen Cluster two years ago.  Aliens from another galaxy who want our worlds.  Hell not just the worlds.  They want us too.  Brought to their heel or dead; either way.  I ended up in the tundra so at least I was spared the lizards but here there are teeth..lots of teeth.  My armour has their marks upon it and I do not have them repaired or painted over.  Memory helps me survive.  I have to face them again.  Werewolves...real ones.”
Gadda, Southern Wastes, Camarthen Prime 4332 IC

How does a Beotan compare to a Human miniature in terms of its size.  See below!

While we were taking the photos for the new miniatures we played a game of Patrol Angis and here are two photos from that scenario.  As you can see two Retained Knight gun crew on a Moth 88 Espatan Portable Weapon Platform fail to hold off a charge by Beotans upon their position.  Beotans encircle an Adder Combat car with its dead Muster crew laying next to it.  The Adder Combat Car is an Orange type with grenade launcher turret which has been modified with additional baggage and parts from our Vehicle Conversion Pack to make it an extended recon car.

If you are keen on the forces of the Shia Khan Empire then check out all of their infantry and portable weapons HERE and all of their vehicles HERE in 15mm scale.  If you play Patrol Angis then you will need all three of the current books to make full use of the Khanate aliens; see them HERE.

We will see you again in March with more new releases for the range and we will be switching back to the Prydian Army now that the Khanate have been dramatically increased in their available choices.  But before that one more free article will be happening during this month so keep an eye out for that.  Remember you get Reward Points added to your account every time you order from us and these can be used for discounts and special items at any time; 100 Free on your first order. Extra value!  Lastly if you want to discuss Ion Age or our miniatures in your collection or see what is going on then join our Alternative Armies Tabletop Gaming group on Facebook.
