Patrol Angis AAR Arcticon 2019 plus free Portable Castle PDF downloads

My thanks to Aris Kolehmainen and the team at Arcticon 2019 over in the United States for putting on a first class 15mm science fiction convention and allowing The Ion Age to sponsor the event too.  It is my pleasure to present the After Action Report (AAR) for the Patrol Angis event on the day.  It is complete with images and all details.  Also as a special treat we have game statistics for and free downloads of the paper model huge Portable Castle vehicles used at the convention.  Enjoy!  GBS

This is an AAR of the Final Game of the Patrol: Angis 2nd Annual Tournament held at ArctiCon 2019. ArctiCon is a charity gaming event in Merriville, Indiana (USA). This year, proceeds from the event culminated in over $4000 to support military veterans.

Scenario:

Prydian Army – In spite of the best efforts of the Prydian forces, it appears that the Shia Khan have managed to access one of the once thought lost Damascus Portable Castle “Vigilance”. Inside it’s broken and overgrown hull are a score of artefacts recovered from the Dolos Cloud by the Starvaulters. Artefacts that could drastically aid the Prydians in their effort to repel the Khanate empire.

Khanate – Generally speaking, there is little the humans possess that the Khanate covet. Their armour is clunky, their weapons crude, their battlesuits inelegant. However, they do have a knack for discovering things long thought lost to time. In this case, a Proauctor Metaborg, long dormant and in near pristine order. Should it fall into the hands of humanity, it might cause a problem in the future.

Win Conditions:

Prydia (Dave) – Have a Troop Element inside the Portable Castle by the end of Turn 6. This will give reinforcements time to vector in on the location of the Vigilance.
Khanate (Aris) – Prevent the enemy from occupying the Portable Castle, doing so will allow for an extraction of the Proauctor before the humans can reach it.

Scenario Special:

Open the Hanger – A troop element inside the Portable Castle may use an action to open the hanger doors. This is the ONLY way for ISV’s to enter the Portable Castle

Fire Missiles, (hopefully…) – The Anda Missile pod appears to possibly be in working order. Any Troop Element within the castle may spend an action to attempt to fire the Anda pod. This pod may fire indirectly, as if it had a spotter on the target element within range.

When you spend your activation token to fire the missile roll 1D8:

1-4: There is a malfunction, the missiles fire straight up in the air before crashing down on the castle. All Elements in or on the castle take an Anda Missile attack (roll for hits and kills as normal).
Note: No matter who one initiative, each player chooses their own casualties for this attack.

5-8: The pod fires normally, treat this as an Anda Missile Pod attack that has a Spotter for IF.

Turn 1: Aris questions his life choices.
Aris set up his troops in a gamble so that if he won initiative, he would be able to drop an overwatch on his Legionary Support troops sitting on the Battlement platform with their Atomic Destabilizers, allowing him to snipe at the large Prydian element that would be coming up though the woods on the western side of the board.

Aris did NOT win initiative.

Dave opened the game with a solid round of fire, quickly reaping the entire Support element. Aris opt to spend the two activation tokens he had given the squad to save two of them. Dave would follow this up on his next turn by firing an extremely well-placed shot from his Desteria just pasted the edge of one rocky hill, and inside the edge of Castle’s missile pod on the eastern flank, killing the Khanate force commander’s element. Worse still for Aris, his Psychoborgs were A.I. Slaved, which meant they were effectively dead for the rest of the game.

By the end of Turn 1, Dave had successfully taken out 6 Legionaries, 2 man Command Element, and 3 Psychoborgs.

Turn 2: The Pompous Doctrine
Lord Pompous once said “If you’re going to fist’em, fist’em GRATUITOUSLY!”

After much debate in the highest chambers if military thought, it was generally agreed he was speaking of his well known prowess in close combat. This would later be refined to “if you must enter close combat, strike without mercy”, this is also known as The Pompous Doctrine.

Dave showed a prime example of this at work.

Dave’s Duxis with Assaulter and Brawler entered into close combat with Aris’s Legionnaire troop element, resulting in 27 kills on an 8 man element. There were no survivors.

Things were getting dicey for Aris, so he opt to put his future in the hands of dice. Inside the portable castle was an element of Pioneers. The shock troops of the Khanate empire. With one activation token, they activated the Anda pod. Aris targeted the Retained knights that were threatening the western flank, and rolled his dice.

The dice came up as a 5, barely a success, but Aris was not going to complain about this long overdue luck. The pod fires, taking out half of the Retained knights, and locking them down on a failed moral check. Little victories for the Khanate, but this was far from over.

Turn 3: Here there be Giants
Dave had read about Warlords. He knew they were big, he knew they were a match for Duxis, but he had never experienced fighting one yet. Dave’s Desteria were about to experience these giants of the battlefield first hand.

Dave moved his Desteria though the woods into a forward position, he had a few things going for him. First, he was in cover, that +3 would be good to him. Second, They were Desteria, their armour was solid as one could hope for. However, he moved them into the range of warlords sitting in Overwatch, and Hell itself fell upon the brave Desteria.

Shots from Mars, Helios, and Juno cannons were nearly suppressed by their armour but it still took Ablative Armour, all the activation tokens, and the luck of having won initiative to save what little remained of the element.

Turn 4: The Siege Begins
Turn 4 saw the formation of the late game linchpins. The Warlords were single handedly holding the entire eastern flank, while the Duxis and the remnants of the Retained element moved to get closer to the castle.

Eventually the Prydian forces in the west made a hard move to press the Castle wall, not quite able to enter it, but preparing themselves for the fight. Aris opt at this time to pull his full, untouched, element of Pioneers to the battlements, and began raining down Maia rounds down upon the Retained. This would further thin the number of Retained to a mere two; and take out almost all of the Pioneers in the process.

The turn would end with the Prydian force commander deep in the woods, Warlords sitting in overwatch, and all that remained of both forces hugging the wall of the castle in a back and forth firefight.

Turn 5: Lords of War
Dave had to place all his bets one one big play: Get the Retained inside, open the hanger doors, and get the Duxis inside and clean house. It was a suicide mission for the two remaining Retained, however, it was his best shot to win the day. The slug fest had hit him hard, but his Duxis was unharmed, and as hard as he had been hit, Aris had been hit even harder.

With initiative won, Dave moved his Retained into the castle and activated the hanger door. Aris would reply by having the pioneers kill the intruders to little fanfare. With a grand total of 4 Khanate troops in/on the castle, Dave made his move. The Duxis charged towards the open hanger…

… and into the line of fire from the warlords waiting for him.

With inhuman roars the Warlords lived up to their name. The Duxis stood no chance against the onslaught of energies and ballistics being thrown at them, and like a tragic hero of old, it and its pilot died at the brink of it’s goal. The force commander of the Prydian forces then decided to make a strategic withdraw. There could be no victory here today, the Pryidan forces had fallen, and whatever treasures may have been within the ancient hold of the Vigilant, would fall to the hands of the Khanate Empire.

Khanate Victory!!!!

The Aftermath

This was one hell of a game. The combat was intense, the plays were thoughtful, and the line that separated Victory and Defeat has never been thinner. Just look at what was LEFT at the end of the game:

Dave would walk away from the event with a brand new, fresh off the factory floor, Laan type Magog, as well as a complementary line of his very own set of Happy Burger Bots from our wonderful sponsors at Happy Burger.

Remember: Happy Burger is the Fasted Food in the Universe! I look forward to another exciting event next year, and hope to see you guys there!

Want to field your own portable castle? Here are some game statistics to get you to the battlefield in early Prydian style:

As you have seen in the pictures the portable castle was on the table and so here are the links to download for free (just click and save to your device) the PORTABLE CASTLE and a DAMAGED PORTABLE CASTLE.

We hope you enjoyed reading this as much as we did playing Patrol Angis. I’ve been playing competitively one war game or another since I was sixteen and this was the most brutal, bloody, nail biting, and most importantly: fun game I have played to date.

The Interview a story and game stats by Aris Kolehmainen

“PRESENTING HIS ILLUSTRIOUS MAJESTY” The little man was now pointing the megaphone directly at her, “THE KNIGHT OF ALL COLORS, LORD HIGH OF THE CHINTZ GATES, PROTECTOR OF THE FREE PEOPLES OF PRYDIA, KEEPER OF THE KEY TO BOLDARITY, KNOWER OF NO FEAR, MASTER OF HIS COMMAND, AND NOTED WELL DRESSER: LORD GAUD D. POMPOUS.”

It is my great pleasure to have a chuckle and to present to all you IonFans out there who play Patrol Angis and enjoy a tale set in The Ion Age a free article by our good friend Aris Kolehmainen.  An interview with a hero of the Desteria Knights who is not quite what he seems.  A fine read and it is followed by game statistics for using the character of Lord Pompous in your games.

Click HERE to download this free three page article from our website.  The Interview contains a first person story as well as game rules to field this character.

The Desteria Knights are the super heavy infantry of the Prydian Army and of the Marcher Barons and the mercenary Condots.  Used to crack the hardest targets they carry the fire power of several Retained Knights and can withstand punishment which would destroy any lesser soldier.  We have a great value platoon pack of Desteria Knights which contains an additional free miniature unique to that code.  We also have two trooper packs and a command pack of these mighty soldiers which can all be seen on our website HERE.

Until the end of the month we have pre-order offers on the yet to be released Adder Combat Tankettes.  Orders are shipping out 1st October which contain one or more of these five different light vehicles.  Save from ten percent to twenty five percent.  See the offers HERE and read all about this on our BLOG.  The Adder Tankettes are also on our 15mm Prydian Vehicles page along with all of the wheeled Adders and lifter (hover) Adders with regular release in October 2018.

Our last update for the month will be the end of this week and it is a free article for Patrol Angis.  Using Adder Combat Tankettes in your games is an update to Callsign Taranis giving you game statistics for these tracked vehicles along with their points costs.  We already have a free download for you to use Grey Adder 'Battle Taxi' APC's in your game.  Download it from our website by clicking HERE

Thanks for reading and well done Aris!

Cold Climes Planetary Militia platoon and packs released with Twenty Six new poses

The 37th Planetary Defence Regiment lost thirty percent of its strength in the first moments of the Khanate invasion of Faercycle II.  In the years since the abortive Prang raids the governor of the world had increased the military presence in the capital Ismere where the starport is located and also in other major cities such as Darga and Amatrall.  Cities like these sat atop deep mines sunk into the frozen planet in search of ore for the much in demand titanium for which the whole star system was known Precinct wide.  News of the fall of Camarthen had reached Faercycle in 4331 IC less than two months after the relief fleet had taken the war back to the Shia Khan Empire there.  What was not known was just how many Dragon Ships had fled from Camarthen Prime and plunged into deep space heading for nearby stars such as Faercycle.  Without Ancep Drive the transits would take years, giving time to prepare, but equally it meant there was no way to track the aliens before they arrived in system.  As it turned out it was a total of seven Dragon Ships which arrived at more than half the speed of light in 4338 IC rapidly decelerating before plunging into the atmospheres of Faercycle II and Faercycle  III.  The lack of orbital support prevented any of the large starships being destroyed before reaching the ground but warnings were sent out system and all space fold capable ships immediately evaded and left local space so as to prevent capture by the enemy. Ismere was the only place on Faercycle II which was bombed during the landings and this was thought to be in an effort to prevent effective air support of more remote locations. Being stationed on the rubbacrete landing fields the 37th Regiment was mauled by the projectile and destabliser rounds dropped in passing by Invader Alpha; the designation of that Dragonship.

Ismere Starport was attacked by some forty five thousand Shia Khan troops from four different Legions once Invader Alpha had landed nineteen miles outside of the heated zone of the starport.  They were faced by more than eighty thousand planetary defence force personnel as well as two thousand Retained Knights of the Lindworm Company and two dozen Starvaulters.  Of the local forces stationed at the sprawling starport city only half of them were combat ready with the rest being pilots and other professions not useful in the battle due to loss of equipment and other reasons.  Making use of their heated Aketon Mk III non-powered armour with synth fur outer layer and artic training what was left of the 37th along with the 9th and the 25th regiments engaged the aliens out in the tundra beyond the heated zone. The wind and freezing conditions lessened the numerical advantage held by the Legions and their screen of goblinoid Maigs were unable to break through.  A retreat was called under intense pressure from Pioneers supported by Warlords and Psycoborgs for whom the temperature seemed less of an issue.  In a battle which lasted four days the Khanate were eventually halted and repelled back into the snow and ice after a high water mark reached of the commercial district of Ismere.  With the starport and its integral city burning and suffering power losses a choice was made not to pursue the aliens back to their starship...for the moment.  With only patrols watching the swirling snows the rest of the military in Ismere set about assisting in ensuring fusion plants and other energy sources kept the underground heating systems in operation.  They prevented a freezing which would have doomed hundreds of thousands of people.

Reports came in from across Faercycle II and from the rest of the stellar system too.  This was in no small part due to the valour expected of the Starvaulters who had repelled waves of Legionaries who were assaulting the primary dish array in the centre of the curtained area of the landing pads on the western edge of the starport.  Those who survived were hailed rightly as heroes having accounted for more than a hundred times their own number.  It seemed the third planet in the system had fallen to the Khanate after resisting and its signal went dark after a harrowing last stand which was broadcast live to Ismere.  Amatrall city had also fallen after being burned almost to ashes. The city of Darga on the other hand had repelled the small force which had mounted an attack upon it and its own wings of Jangle verticopters and Punk dropships had come through completely intact.  Governor Tumault of Ismere made the choice to allow Darga to take some of Ismere's troops and to then use its intact air transport to harass the aliens elsewhere distant on the planet.  Ismere had the largest concentration of Dragon Ships and enemies nearer to it than other major centres of inhabitation so it kept back and then also brought in every Gytrash Quad Strider as well as every Steornede Battlesuit which could be taken from elsewhere.  The governor made it known that the large force he had amassed would be setting out overland to destroy every enclave and starship the Khanate had one by one.  This would be a mighty challenge indeed and it took several weeks for the regiments to be outfitted and organised ready to march.

In three snaking columns composed of hundreds of Hazelwurm Patrol Cars, Colebretta Carriers and other wheeled vehicles as well as quad striders and the extreme weather purpose designed Tohlic Crawlers set out.  Their targets were Invader Alpha and then Invaders Beta, Charlie and Delta. The crawlers would take the most distant target. One by one they would free Faercycle II.      To be continued...

Ismere Starport, Faercyle II, Camarthen Cluster  4338 IC

Playing Xin in Patrol Angis a new free booklet

The Xin updated free booklet for using in Patrol Angis is here!  The Prang have had their new releases and updated free booklet but now it is the turn for the Trade Fleet of the Xin Hegemony to get their update.  These fantastic 15mm scale space opera Chinese inspired soldiers are well liked by 15mm sci-fi players the globe over.  We now present the updated free six page booklet for using the Sanbao in your games of Patrol Angis.  Get it on the website from our dropbox HERE or read on and download it in this article.

The updated Xin booklet contains fiction, background and more as well as statistic tables for infantry, infantry sized vehicles and larger vehicles too.  It is an evolving play testing document and introduces vehicles which we will create in the future for this force in the game.  You will need a copy of Patrol Angis to make use of this free booklet and for the larger vehicles we recommend the expansion Callisign Taranis.  Download the Xin in Patrol Angis free PDF from our dropbox by clicking HERE. Thanks and enjoy!

If you like the idea of a trading space fleet which does ply the stars buying and selling and fighting then perhaps the Xin are for you.  See their page on our website HERE.

During July we have an offer on the core pack of Xin Rifle Infantry too.

Have you tried Patrol Angis?  The Ion Age's 15mm scale skirmish system.  There are three books in the series so far and they can be had in print or as digital downloads as well as value bundles and a game pack too.  All HERE.  For skirmish you need only the Patrol Angis book, to add larger vehicles and more then get the expansion Callsign Taranis and to fight the alien Shia Khan Empire you need the first army book called The Khanate Return.

Patrol Angis
15mm Scale Skirmish Wargaming
Wargame rules for use with 15mm miniatures and models. An enjoyable playing experience in a space opera setting unlike any other. Tactically challenging but not complex, these rules reward players for their playing and not by the use of endless charts, tables and over powered characters. Once familiar with the game rules, in a single hour you can play a full game with another person or several or on your own in solo play. The rules will not take long to learn and are suitable for wargamers of all ages from novice to veteran. They are fun and can be expanded into other titles in the series.  Patrol Angis is a skirmish level of wargame which means it typically has between a dozen and about forty 15mm scale miniatures a side in play during a game. It works well with more but those amounts are ideal. Most games have one Platoon sized force per player and have one or two or maybe even three players. A Platoon or Lance which contains typically twenty two (22) miniatures. In Patrol Angis you play either as the Prydian Army in its quest to reclaim worlds lost to the Marcher Barons during the Civil War or you can play in the employ of Canlaster or Yordist or any of the other dozen smaller array of Marcher Barons. This includes playing as a “Conda”' or paid professional mercenary for any side.

This is low intensity warfare title where troops mainly on foot, root each other out over small objectives. It’s not massive, not often glamorous, but it’s pure adventure, it’s the stuff of heroes and it’s skirmishing at its best! Easy to get into and to build upon. It’s the starting point for your wargaming in The Ion Age!

A4 Book, 64 Pages.  All the mechanics you need to play plus more is in the book.  Here is a short list of the contents of the book and if you can look at example pages.  All pages are packed with content.
