Patrol Angis and Callsign Taranis now paid for downloads!

Now on our website and by popular request The Ion Age is delighted to announce that you can now purchase the mighty Patrol Angis and its expansion title Callsign Taranis as paid for download books.  Both 15mm wargame books on their own and a discounted bundle of the two of them together saving ten percent.  The download books are twenty percent cheaper than the print books which we think is fair.  We want to point out too that if you do not order a physical product (any order you pay shipping upon) you will not get the monthly free miniature sorry.  But you do still get your Reward Points and you can use your points against these new digital downloads. Excellent.  Go HERE.

There are three options for you to get into our 15mm space opera wargame rule system digitally and these match up to the same options you have in print (except for the game pack).  The print books are now into their deep second run and are all over the world.  If you were waiting for a download version to try them out now is your time.

Patrol Angis
Patrol Angis is a skirmish level of wargame which means it typically has between a dozen and about forty 15mm scale miniatures a side in play during a game. It works well with more but those amounts are ideal. Most games have one Platoon sized force per player and have one or two or maybe even three players. A Platoon or Lance which contains typically twenty two (22) miniatures. In Patrol Angis you play either as the Prydian Army in its quest to reclaim worlds lost to the Marcher Barons during the Civil War or you can play in the employ of Canlaster or Yordist or any of the other dozen smaller array of Marcher Barons. This includes playing as a “Conda”' or paid professional mercenary for any side.  This is low intensity warfare title where troops mainly on foot, root each other out over small objectives. It’s not massive, not often glamorous, but it’s pure adventure, it’s the stuff of heroes and it’s skirmishing at its best! Easy to get into and to build upon. It’s the starting point for your wargaming in The Ion Age!  64 Page Book, Separate Book Covers as PDF's.  Go HERE.  10.00GBP

Callsign Taranis
Patrol Angis is a skirmish level wargame and with Callsign Taranis you can move from the low intensity infantry focused warfare of the core game which was your starting point in this universe to something a bit larger and multi faceted too. Make use of vehicles from the humble Adder to the supporting Mullo and of course the mighty Taranis super heavy main battle tank. Introduce flying vehicles, hurwent energy shields, buildings, drones and mecha too. Play solo or with two or more players with games featuring one Platoon (22 Miniatures or several vehicles) a side up to four or even six Platoons a side (100 or more miniatures or a dozen vehicles) with smaller games taking less than an hour to play out. In Callsign Taranis you still choose to play as either the Prydian Army or in the employ of Canlaster or Yordan or any number of lesser rebel Marcher Barons all vying for the throne. This includes playing as a “Conda” or professional mercenary too for any side. Callsign Taranis contains all the rules you need to make use of vehicles and structures in other titles in the series.

YOU REQUIRE A COPY OF PATROL ANGIS TO USE THIS BOOK

In this book you will find the expansion rules covering the use of Vehicles in play as well as Structures and other bolt on mechanics. There are also game statistics for the vehicles of the Prydian Civil War and additional skills, equipment and items for your troops. Following on from Patrol Angis is part two of the Prydian Civil War background. Also in this book is the Support Phase and the Between Games development of your forces. Rules for how to play larger games of Patrol Angis and how to generate random terrain. A bolt on section for Building your Forces with Vehicle and Mixed platoons. 64 Page Book, Separate Covers as PDF's.  Go HERE.  10.00GBP

IAFP08 Nox Ordos 15mm platoon pack released!

The biggest and most bad ass armoured infantry of the Shia Khan Empire now have their own 'Ordos', a platoon pack, which contains a full force of these miniatures!  Each Nox stands about 20mm tall and the platoon pack contains fifteen figures and an extra special Nox which is only in the pack and is added free!  Go HERE or read on for more information.

The Shia Khan uses technology that is more advanced that our own, that is sure.  Though many of its troops are apparently slaves and are relatively poorly armoured and armed with Malig and Betrayers being more in common with our Planetary Militia and Muster regiments and their Legionaries a match for our Muster and Retained ranks there are troops evidently which are not expendable slaves.  We speak here of the elite formations of a Legion and more specifically the Nox.  The technology involved in the Jupiter series of plasmastic weapons is in our estimate a century or so beyond our own best efforts (see Academy Auto-Trainer Series 16) but the design contained within the Nox Segmentum pattern powered armour is much beyond that.  Other Khanate Troops use the weapons that Nox carry though they operate in teams of two rather than a Nox which can wield the weapon alone.  However within the sphere of the Legion itself and not speaking of Psychoborgs and other specialised threats it is the Segmentum pattern armour which has baffled us.  Only a handful of Nox have been captured and none of them alive due to what we think is a flesh dissolving gas which is triggered if their armour is opened without the right seal codes.  This gas also corrodes the internal fittings of the armour to the point that only rudimentary inspections can be made.  In fact we have lost three expert fabricators to booby trapped Segmentum suits with imploder bombs.  Information that is known consists of the following.  Firstly the alloys used in the Segmentum's construction cannot be determined but do contain titanium as a stabiliser with a resulting hardness some third better than Alwite and on par with Noblesse series used by Desteria Knights despite being thinner.  Secondly the internal power system of Segmentum is much more efficient as the self fuelling batteries use technology similar to ours but are nearly half the size and also provide the charge for carried weapons such as plasma and laser system whereas our own Alwite powered armour cannot do this.  Thirdly the armour seems to fill with a thick black liquid when sealed which cushions impacts and trauma more effectively that the padding and gel layers in Alwite.  Lastly and most troubling are the seemingly standardised Cynue ports in the neck and chest sections of Segmentum powered armour. While such technology is rightly banned in the Prydian Precinct after the tragedy of the Gurtan Activation the Khanate seem to give artificial intelligence assistance to Nox in combat.  Research continues and we do hope a break through will be reached.
Academy Auto-Trainer Series 17, New Glastonbury, 4332IC

IAFP08 Nox Ordos
This platoon pack gives you a full Ordos (a platoon or force in Patrol Angis) of the heaviest power armoured warriors of the Khanate as well as a unique miniature only found in this code.  Fifteen different poses of miniature which are taken from these pack codes:  IAF052 Nox Demos (Jupiter Plasma Rifles), IAF051 Nox Demos (Janus Blastguns) and IAF062 Nox Command Demos.  On top of this you get the unique miniature which is a Nox lesser officer bare headed with a powered blade and Maia Mpi.  This miniature is found only in this platoon pack and what is more its totally free as part of the pack.  Excellent!   As always this code can be bought as a pack or select the three packs and save 10% option on the page. Price 15.00GBP per pack.  Go HERE.

You can find the rest of the Khanate Empire in 15mm scale on our website HERE including other Nox, the Legionaries, Warlords and of course the verminous Malig Space Goblins too.  Players of Patrol Angis can download a free PDF for using the Khanate in the game from our Drop Box by clicking HERE.  To see all articles on the great free resource that is The Ion Age blog click HERE to go to a refined post search for Nox on the blog.

As you can see Nox are much larger and bulkier than Muster (next to a Canlastrian Musterman above) or Retained Knights.  They are on a size parallel to Desteria Knights the largest Human knights of Prydia and they are very tough indeed. Each miniature is about 20mm tall.

Now I know many of you already own our 15mm Nox and because of that there is an offer this month where when you place an order for any products if you wish to get the unique Nox Officer from the platoon pack INSTEAD of your free IMP38 Male Adventurer you can!  Just email info@theionage.com title it with your order number and then 'please give me Nox Officer rather than IMP38' and we will do the rest.  Excellent!

The Rheged Company of Ice and The Code

Viewed by many in the Precinct as outcasts who hold to the Code Gallant more than to anything else the infamous Rheged Company hail from a small icy world and it shows in their demeanour.  First to the fray and taking in those fallen knights which no other Condot or Barony will touch the Rheged wear the name of their founder killed in dishonour.  Often found in deep space and aboard starships lost during the last Khanate War they are warriors true.  Created by and written for you by Aris Kolehmainen they are his own force in Patrol Angis and this is their story.

You can download this article as a PDF from our Drop Box by clicking HERE.

10 The Rheged company
The Rheged Company of Ice and The Code

The Rheged company was founded by a Knight Errant by the name of Sir Richard “Ragged Rich” Rheged. Known for his immense stature, jovial mannerisms, and ferocity of the field of battle. Sir Rheged was born on the world of Heimdal XII, an ice world with a reputation for dangerous wildlife, inhospitable environment, and the proud rugged people who call it home. He bore on his person several reminders of his home world but most noticeably his great fur cape which was a traditional gift and a symbolic of his rite of passage amongst members of his noble house. He bore this cape on his person in battle, which along with his Roaz Axe and icy blue armour, gave him a truly medieval appearance, further lending to his moniker.

Upon receiving his quest from the throne,  he formed his mercenary company which was aligned with Sir Rheged’s dedication to speed and manoeuvrability on the field. In fact, not a single unit was fielded that was not mounted on a Khamel war bike, or in any number of armoured transports. His own preference was an an early model Khamel made with reinforced Heimdalian brass armour plating.

Some years after Rheged’s Company was founded, the company was hired by the Baron of Vincett XII, a planet loyal to Prydia, but unfortunately located in a zone known for its numerous roving bands of pirates. These pirates were the source of constant raids against the various planets in the Vincett system and had reached a point where to allow the status quo to continue would mean the downfall of the local government, and possible rebellion. Sir Rheged accepted the task of flushing as many pirates from the system as possible.

While tracking a pirate band that had been eluding him for some days,  Sir Rheged’s battleship “Spear of Truth” happened upon a derelict battleship named the “Stallion of Might” with its emergency beacon still lit. Hoping to find survivors, a boarding party from the ‘Spear’ made its way aboard, and found the broken, mutilated, but living body of a young Prydian Knight Errant. This knight was brought aboard the ‘Spear and medical teams worked many long and tremulous hours, but were eventually able to stabilize him.

The knight was Sir Brynjar Ryttare, on a Quest from the Princess herself, he was disgraced by his own vanity and brash acts. While his actions were in clear violation of the Code Gallant, Rheged saw potential in him. Rheged made Brynjar his squire and sent him to train with the men and women of the Muster, Brynjar slowly built up the respect of those around him, and for himself. Though hard work, he worked his way into the confidence of the leadership structure of the Company and took an honour guard position in Sir Rheged’s Khamel demi as the left wing-man.

The Company changed drastically after a single event during the Yordist rebellion. Tasked at containing a small Yordist force from exiting a city, the Rheged Company put on a spectacular performance, striking like lightning, quickly, devastatingly, and never in the same spot twice. It was after a patrol when Sir Rheged and Sir Ryttare removed their armour and were about to retire when a shot was fired from a far off building, striking Sir Rheged in the chest, killing him near instantly. Brynjar was helpless to save him, but the breach of the Code Gallant and the death of his friend and mentor brought him to rage.

Brynjar’s conviction was clear; the sniper was commanded to make such an act by the leading knight or Baron of the enemy force, the order to strike down an un-armored knight was as much of a breach of the Code as the act itself, therefore, the knight and those under him were fallen knights, and the law Code must be defended and an example made.

In his fury he took to the fallen Knight's Khamel and asked all who honoured the Code join him to avenge their fallen leader. Upon hearing of the death of Sir Rheged, the entirety of the Company came out in full force. Gunfire and explosions were muted to the sound of hundreds of Khamel war bikes and armoured troop carriers tearing though the city. Not one Yordist was spared in the motorized blitz, every last enemy combatant was run down or put to the blade.

After the slaughter, a new direction was formed. The Rheged Company would maintain it’s name in memory of their fallen leader. Further, all their armour would be painted the ice blue colour of Sir Rheged, but the pauldrons would be painted red, to display their fury at a breach of the Code Gallant, but rimmed in black, in memory of the assassination and loss of their once great friend and commander. Many began to wear furs of dangerous predators they would hunt as a rite of passage, in the same way Sir Rheged did. The Company would follow Sir Brynjar Ryttare on their new mission, to stomp out any who would break the law of the Code Gallant.

While their actions have put them generally in the path of those attempting to strike against Prydian rule, the Company has been known to seek out and bring down “fallen knights” from within the rank and file of the Prydian forces as well. This has led some Barons and knights to be wary around the Rheged Company, but the call to protect the Code from any and all who would abuse it or discard it has gained a following over the past few years, and while the company primarily sticks to Khamel war bikes and troop transports, a few platoons of Desteria Knights and Taranis Tanks have joined his ranks as well. Rumor even states that Sir Ryttare now even commands several Afara Striders. But no matter how large the Company grows, their goal of maintaining the purity of the Code Gallant remains forever at their forefront.

Note: It is common for many to wear animal furs or pelts attached to their armor. Leaders almost always wear a fur lined cape as a symbol of rank.  Further, many riders bear Marks of Righteousness on the flanks of their vehicles, or armor. These are gifted by a superior for a noted action that preserved or defended the honor of The Code.

Fielding this Force in Patrol Angis

Playing the Rheged Company means playing for speed. Khamel Warbikes are the name of the game, being able to bring huge fire power where, and when, it’s needed quickly. This does come at a cost though, as since the core of your force are mounted on Infantry Sized Vehicles, you won’t be able to return fire when shot at, so think wisely not just where you’re going but how to get there!

If a roving band of Code defending bikers aren’t your thing, mounting your forces in armoured transports is the way to go. So long as the force can strike fast and hard, you’re on the right path! Try mounting your forces in the mighty Taranis  APC, or Colabreta Patrol Carrier APC.  These are on the Vehicles page of The Ion Age website.

The Rheged Company is a great opportunity to learn some simple sculpting techniques, like fur, to create a much more ‘Nordic’ feeling force. Or you can be a bit brave and try a couple head swaps and a little padding on the armour to make some Retained on Khamels. Creating Marks of Righteousness for your units is also a simple sculpting job that adds another point of uniqueness to your minis and some visual variety to your army.

You may have noticed the number heading this article.  This ties to the uniform reference on our Uniforms of the Prydian Precinct Poster which shows in detail thirty different uniforms of troops. See it HERE.

This concludes the introduction to the Rheged Company and we hope you enjoyed it and are inspired to take your place in the wars raging across the Prydian Precinct.

The Barony of Malmsbury on the edge of Prydian space

Looking out upon the unknown space beyond the bounds of the Prydian Precinct, where the wreckage lays, far from the core systems and further still from the war against the Khanate Empire is the Barony of Malmsbury.  Beginning the civil war within the ranks of the Yordan barons who sided with the Kingmaker Nevell the death of Baron Robert 'Pillager' Fintzhue saw Malmsbury switch sides and ally itself with the Throne in 4331 IC.  Now an enemy of the League of Yordan this single stellar system has the darkness to its back and the enemy still to its front.  Don't you just love the Havelock Battlesuit.  You can download this article as a PDF for free from our Dropbox by clicking HERE.

08 Barony of Malmesbury

The Barony of Malmsbury is located on edge of the Prydian Precinct in the Malmsbury stellar system.  This planet rich system contains two worlds capable of supporting life whose names are Rowde (Malmsbury III) and Broham (Malmsbury IV) as well as several gas giants and a molten rock orbiting its star very closely.  Contained to one system the Barony is not as wealthy as many others and not even as wealthy as some other single system Baronies.  This is due partially to being so distant to the core of the Precinct for trade and also to a lack of precious metals and arable land on the dusty world of Broham.

Until 4331 IC the noble family of Fintzhue ruled by baronial decree over the Malmsbury stellar system and came into conflict during the period of first Ancept expansion with neighbouring worlds (Broham which was held by the Strangen family) and then neighbouring systems such as Alix and Linnuis Prime during the late 4200's IC.  It fell to the final ruling member of the marcher family Baron Robert 'Pillager' Fintzhue to declare his support of the League of Yordan by attacking the Barony of Linnuis in a dishonest sneaking action using disguised commercial starships.  In this vicious assault the baron earned the moniker 'Pillager' due to his refusal to take prisoners as per the Code Gallant and for carrying off goods and valuable prisoners.

With his reputation as a wicked adventurer known to those baronies and condot companies in his region of space Baron Fintzhue carried out raids and damaging attacks upon the enemies of the League of Yordan. These actions included a hard fought repulsion of an invading task force of the veteran mercenaries of the Naranga Company of his home world of Rowde in 4326 IC which left him badly injured.  This injury led to a decreasingly stable mental state which in 4331 IC saw him deposed and then executed atop the ramparts of his fortress on Rowde in a coup which then declared its loyalty to Princess Cyon and the Aeddan Council.  Three regiments of the Prydian Army supported by condots of the Gryllus Company assisted in guiding the Barony of Malmsbury to peace.  It is headed by a cousin of 'the Pillager' the now Baron Alger Fintzhue.  Alger has adopted the Code Gallant and rules through cooperation with the Throne.

A Muster Fire-Team with Hazelwurm support
The military forces of the Barony of Malmsbury are focused upon the expansive use of regiments of Muster troops and a lot of Battlesuit support.  Due to the continual lack of hard currency the heavier armour and portable castles of the Barony are of older marks and tend towards wheeled and hover variants and limited use of Hurwent generators.  There are two hundred regiments of Muster equipped along standard Precinct patterns as well as a five million strong Rowde Planetary Militia and a one million strong Broham Planetary Militia.  There are ten regiments of Retained Knights who work closely with the Malmsbury Muster in all areas.  Much use is made of Havelock Battlesuits which are deployed in place of portable weapons and bikes at the platoon level.   Malmsbury has many personalised Havelocks and also full fabricator plants to assemble these battlesuits enmasse.  Portable Castles are mainly of the older Cassillis marks and Malmsbury possesses seventeen jump capable starships of the Serpentine and Griffin types.

A Malmsbury Havelock!
In the annuls of the Academy Auto Trainers held on New Glastonbury the most famous military campaign of the Barony of Malmsbury is that of repulsion of the invading Naranga Company on Rowde in 4326 IC.  Coming in from out system under heavy acceleration nine starships belonging to the Canlastrian backed mercenaries landed some thirty thousand veteran troops around the capital city Layswater on Rowde managing to do so before planetary defences could be sufficiently readied. With much of  the forces belonging to Malmsbury no where near it fell to the Rowde Planetary Militia as well as available Muster with Havelock support to mount a defence.  Led by Baron Robert 'Pillager' Fintzhue himself, who happened to be in Layswater, the fighting raged for nearly a week before the Baron put himself into the fray.  From the front he assaulted the toughest position held by the mercenaries and broke their hold while in the process being horribly burned by plasma fire from the enemy.  The Naranga Company boosted for orbit leaving their dead behind and escaped having failed to take the capital and force the surrender of the Barony to Canlaster.  It stands as an excellent example to new knights of how to repel an invader and is required study.

A Malmsbury Muster FireTeam
Retained Knight front view in Malmsbury colours
Side View
The battle dress of the Barony of Malmsbury is recognised across the Prydian Precinct for its heraldry and legitimate claim to a stellar system.  It consists of a black uniform base with bright yellow detailing.  The baronial symbol used most widely for Malmsbury is a black lion rampant upon a bright yellow field.  This uniform is carried over into the Planetary Militia formations.  Malmsbury heavier vehicles and armour such as striders follow an emphasis upon brown with black and yellow to mark out their superior status on the battlefield.

Fielding this Force in Patrol Angis

For wargamers wishing to put the Marcher Baron forces of Malmsbury into their games of Patrol Angis the process is quite straight forward 15mm scale.  As this is a Prydian Precinct faction taking place during the period of the Civil War and after that the standard Prydian Army miniatures painted up as this Barony will suit the task ideally.  Suitable codes for use are IAFP07 Planetary Militia Platoon with Unique Miniature which will give you the militias of the home system along with IAF054 Hazelwurm and IAF061 Colebretta Carrier for their transport.  The bulk of Malmsbury is made up of Muster and Battlesuits and to that end we recommend a core force of IAFP04 Muster Platoon with Unique Miniature and IAF020 Havelock Battlesuits to make up your platoons.  Personalties for higher level command can come from IAF057 Knight Errants of Prydia and IAF004 Retained Knight Command Alpha.  You will of course need your copy of Patrol Angis to play. Assemble your force using the standard creation rules in the book to suit your take on this faction. Marcher Barons and Condot Mercenaries on the whole use the same armour, weapons and equipment as the Prydian Army with different uniform colours and heraldry.  Possibilities are endless!

You may have noticed the number heading this article.  This ties to the uniform reference on our Uniforms of the Prydian Precinct Poster which shows in detail thirty different uniforms of troops. See it HERE.

This concludes the introduction to the Barony of Malmsbury and we hope you enjoyed it and are inspired to take your place in the wars raging across the Prydian Precinct.

This is our last release of the month. Go HERE or read on.

Patrol Angis Cover Art
Atop a downed Battlesuit the heroes gather as the foes circle all around.  Their weapons make fire to the fore as behind a rebelling city is lit aflame by the laser bombardment of a low floating starship. This is how I see the cover of Patrol Angis. Digitally drawn by our lead designer Sam Croes this poster print was made locally here in Scotland on high quality 200gsm paper using rich inks.  Its a premium product to grace your wargaming walls with.  Bare or in a frame.  Supplied carefully rolled.  The image is exactly A3 size (300mm by 420mm) while the full post it sits on has a white framing border making the total dimensions 320mm by 450mm.  As with all of our other products we offer you several purchase options.  You can purchase one poster print at a great price or three of the same one and automatically save 10% on screen.  You can also get the poster print signed by the artist.

Callsign Taranis Cover Art
Majesty and sheer ruddy terror is what I think of when I see those Taranis tanks.  Lethal instruments of war advancing over broken rocky ground while behind them the torn remains of their last enemies are burning.  This is how I see the cover of Callsign Taranis. We have now released everything for the month but we have a free PDF for the Prang Army in Patrol Angis coming soon online.  Lastly there will be a full article on this but our special offer for this month lasting until months end is the IAF020 Havelock Battlesuit one of our most popular original codes which is now in resin rather than metal and now comes with ALL the weapon variants on a sprue at the same price meaning more value plus it is 25% off.  See it HERE on the website.
