Play Test rules for Starvaulters in Patrol Angis on our Facebook Group

Work is progressing upon the forth book in the series for Patrol Angis the 15mm scale space opera wargame from The Ion Age.  I over see all of the titles published by and going to be published by Alternative Armies and The Ion Age and such with several new titles ongoing the work on Baron has been slow. Sorry!  Baron will be a source book for the Prydian Precinct with a focus upon the Civil War and the Marcher Barons.  Within Baron one new faction will be introduced...The Starvaulters.  The best of the best and the true Knights of the Stellar Vastness who live by the Code Gallant.

Do you want to try out the new rules?

In Baron this new faction is the only part of the book with all new game mechanics.  There are other new rules in the book too but these are smaller in scope and inserted into existing frameworks. The Starvaulters need some final testing.  We have done the initial play in house and have got them all but ready after two attempts but we are now offering a chance to field these knights to those interested.  Feedback upon the new troops, infantry scale vehicles, personalities, gear and skills is most welcome.  These are powerful troops.  Everything in the play test document will be featured in the final book and we are already making the miniatures too.  In fact in the document is an image of the first Starvaulter sculpts.  Every person who assists in the testing will be credited in the book.

If you wish to get the play testing document then go to the Alternative Armies Tabletop Gaming group on Facebook and download it from the post on the group where it is attached.  It will be there for the next several weeks and you are most welcome to come along and talk Patrol Angis.  Just apply to join our friendly group and then throw some dice.  As you would expect you do need a copy of Patrol Angis in print or digital to make use of the play test document.  You can find the game HERE on our website.

Baron has been slowly building up with me since last year and this is the final stage of testing needed for it.  See you on the group!

Thanks for Reading,

Platoon Packs now with added option
We have over one hundred and fifty 15mm scale codes at The Ion Age and it expands every month.  When a faction gets large enough we create a 'platoon pack' which gives two squads plus a command team for a complete force for Patrol Angis right out of the box.  Each of these platoon packs comes with a unique to it only miniature which is added for free to the pack.  This is extra value we give you for choosing Ion Age for your wargaming.  Customer feedback over the past few months has increasingly suggested that we allow this unique to it miniature to be available on its own for purchase.  So we now offer that!  If you click on any IAFP platoon pack you will see the normal option of one pack, three packs with a 10% saving and now 'unique miniature only'.  Awesome!  Here is a list of our platoon packs as of October 2017.

What is in the Callsign Taranis book?

Get ready for the second book in the universe of The Ion Age and the first expansion to Patrol Angis! On 3rd June 2016 with great offers we will present Callsign Taranis to the world in an Early Supporter Offer.  Missed the first look at the new book cover and the coming offers?  See them on our blog HERE.  Read on to find out just what is in this great new book!

15mm Expansion Rules set in The Ion Age.
Welcome to the Expansion of the One Hour Tabletop Wargame Patrol Angis.

Wargame expansion rules for use with 15mm miniatures and models from theionage.com.  An enjoyable playing experience set in a space opera setting unlike any other.  Patrol Angis is a skirmish level wargame and with Callsign Taranis you can move from the low intensity infantry focused warfare of the core game which was your starting point in this universe to something a bit larger and multi faceted too.  Make use of vehicles from the humble Adder to the supporting Mullo and of course the mighty Taranis super heavy main battle tank.  Introduce flying vehicles, hurwent energy shields, buildings, drones and mecha too.  Play solo or with two or more players with games featuring one Platoon (22 Miniatures or several vehicles) a side up to four or even six Platoons a side (100 or more miniatures or a dozen vehicles) with smaller games taking less than an hour to play out.  In Callsign Taranis you still choose to play as either the Prydian Army or in the employ of Canlaster or Yordan or any number of lesser rebel Marcher Barons all vying for the throne.  This includes playing as a “Conda” or professional mercenary too for any side.    Callsign Taranis contains all the rules you need to make use of vehicles and structures in other titles in the series.

YOU REQUIRE A COPY OF PATROL ANGIS TO USE THIS BOOK

In this book you will find the expansion rules covering the use of Vehicles in play as well as Structures and other bolt on mechanics.  There are also game statistics for the vehicles of the Prydian Civil War and additional skills, equipment and items for your troops.  Following on from Patrol Angis is part two of the Prydian Civil War background.  Also in this book is the Support Phase and the Between Games development of your forces.  Rules for how to play larger games of Patrol Angis and how to generate random terrain.  A bolt on section for Building your Forces with Vehicle and Mixed platoons.  This and more all in a packed sixty four pages!

“This last decade has seen suffering on a scale not seen for centuries since the obliterating horror of the Aldan Crucible.  In the twenty years since the murder of my father in rightful battle and following this my abduction as a child Prydia has been aflame and never more so than in the this decade now closed.  None know the true count of this conflict but it is in the billions of needless deaths.  All these deaths needless and the result of the ambitions of the rebel barons and their leagues. Now, here, in the liberation of Bosworth IV we have reached the high water mark of the Leagues.  They will rise no more.  Edmund Bluefort leader and lord of the League of Canlaster is dead by my own hand this very day in fair joust.  With his death and the returning of this planet to freedom I send out this message across all the systems in the Precinct.  Freedom is coming and the darkness will be lifted in the months and years to come.  As long as it takes, you will all be liberated and returned to a worthy peace.  Coming from the skies the red and white of the Prydian Army will drive out the rebel barons and their lackeys one planet, one settlement at a time.  The flame that threatened to burn us all and reduce us once more to savages will be put out.  Already it gutters and fails.  That which has been ruined will be rebuilt and restored.  Prydia is rising once more and now more than ever before we must stand united against threats that may come to us from beyond our own stars.  This civil war will end!”
Princess Daphne Cyon addresses the Precinct from Zone 62, New Bosworth 4330IC

Shia Khan Empire in Patrol Angis free PDF download

A thousand years ago the Ban of Prejudice was lifted when in the climactic battle for Aldan IV the accursed Templars detonated the Aldan Crucible and in doing so created a both a dark age and the end of the Great Khanate War. Their matter gateway in the Aldan system destroyed the Shia Khan Empire had no easy way to reach the worlds that became the Prydian Precinct as their empire lay so far away that no Dragon Ship could navigate to that region of space without immense difficulty. Gradually the Shia Khan became a memory and then a legend held by folk as a tale and nothing more. Had it not been for the occasional wreak and discovery of artefacts they would have remained that way. Had it not been for Hugo Sevaris the Khanate would have faded away. But Sevaris became the most notorious traitor in human history when he used arcane knowledge to activate the matter gateway in the Camarthen star system.

Despite a desperate action in the deep Belkus Labyrinth the Camarthen Planetary Militia with the aid of the few hundred Retained Knights of Prydia on the planet could not stem a tide of Shia Khan troops which emerged from the purple light of the matter gateway. A civilian fusion reactor taken from a nearby city was detonated and the Belkus Labyrinth destroyed burying the gateway and those coming from it under hundreds of feet of stone and earth. A message was sent to New Glastonbury at the fastest possible speed.

"A matter gateway is active on Camarthen IV. Losses are mounting, send everything; everyone. Send them now. The Khanate have returned."

It did not take long for the Legions of the Shia Khan Empire to dig their way to the surface and begin once more their determined drive to conquer mankind.
Knight General Obermann. Fleet Command. 4329IC

The Prototype 15mm SuperBlue Adder Vehicle

We do not often show off early prototypes but in this case I wanted to make an exception. With Patrol Angis coming out in just over a weeks time (Go HERE) I wanted to fill you in on where we are going. Not next month or next three months but the next stage and the lead to the next title in the book series. While Patrol Angis focuses upon infantry skirmish with the addition of battlesuits, bikes and portable weapons the next title will add in structures and...vehicles. Small to large these vehicles are everything from most humble to the most glorious. One of the most heavily requested additions to the Adders, Skylark, Mullo and other vehicles in our current range was the mentioned in the story 'SuperBlue'. A massively up armoured Adder variant featuring replusar (Anti-Gravity) propulsion like the talked of Taranis main battle tanks which sported a heavy laser capable of bringing down much larger targets. The Super Blue is a hunter killer with a lot of bang for the buck as they say.

What we are showing you here is currently the master of the prototype SuperBlue Adder. While the final design that will be released will be a little different it will be close to the same as what you can see now. We carry out such tests and prototypes upon all of our vehicles and larger items to make sure they are just right and this is the first time I have shown anyone outside of the company such images. As you can see the SuperBlue is composed of three pieces. The Hull with its repulsar engine pods and superior armour, the turret with a modified Valerin Laser Cannon and a specially designed floating stand to lift the vehicle off the playing surface. The second image shows the prototype next to an Orange Adder Combat Lifter for scale along with a measurement. This vehicle is a part, a distant part, of the Adder family and will sit well with the dozen Adder Combat Cars and Lifters we already have available. You can see these on our website HERE

We hope you like our hunter killer and any feedback is as always most welcome. Expect to see it later this year. If you are interested in knowing where the origin of this vehicle comes from here is the text from 2014 that inspired it:

One of the innovations that the very beginning of the Prydian Army made in the year before the battle of Fenway Prime was to bring back ancient military designs that had been brought to the Precinct by those first long forgotten Humans fleeing the anarchy of the species home world. While the powered armour and energised weapons were inventions from the Ban of Prejudice a thousand years earlier the patterns for what would become the Havelock and Duxis battlesuits were taken from this ancient knowledge. The Prydian Army had no ground transport for its Muster. Ground transport that could bring the soldiers to the battle but also support them while they were in combat. The answer came from this same source and became the Adder Combat Car series. In the Resource Wars of the 21st Century before the time of the Ark Ships and mankind taking to the stars a similar style of warfare combined with a lack of raw material existed. The solution of the time for the bulk of infantry was the Combat Car. Easy to produce, easy to maintain and made from simple parts and well tested technology they were cheaper than any other vehicle of the time overall. They could carry a four man fire-team or they could act in a support role with mounted weapons in the same range as those used by crewed weapons or battlesuits. A modular hull meant that often only the turret and some internal systems had to be changed over to create a new model in the series. Fitting new power systems and drives and moving away from the fossil fuels of the twenty first century meant that Reckart Nevall and the weakened Aeddan Council on the New Glastonbury Tor now had the Adder.

Adder Combat Cars come in many types within the series including newer different drive systems but the bulk of them are four wheeled or lifter types. With an average weight of just over five and a half tons and roughly sixteen feet in length that Adder is not a combat heavy weight like the Taranis. A colour coding system is in use to make Adders easy to assign to Regiments (and indeed the Marcher Barons use the same system) and to allow Muster who can sometimes not be as used to war as a Retained Knight a simple recognition method. The Red Adder is the standard Combat Car with space for four and mounting a turret with a Moth 88 Rotary Cannon. The Yellow Adder is the fire support car and has two crew along with a turret with an Anda 60mm Missile Pod. The Black Adder acts as an armoured punch giving the Muster the ability to knock out battlesuits and other smaller tough targets with two crew and a turret mounted Fretan Rail Gun. Less common is the Orange Adder which is infantry support mounting a specialised turret with a Moth 30 automatic 50mm Grenade Launcher which is a recent introduction to the series. Dedicated Adders include the Green Adder which is a command and control car at the battalion level and the White Adder for medical teams and battlefield triage. The 'Battle Taxi' type Grey Adder is heavily modified and can carry two fire-teams or a squad at a real squeeze. There are also some very specialised Adders too for purposes such as the SuperBlue Adder, the Brown Adder and the Purple Adder. Every Muster Regiment is in possession of hundreds of Adders across the spectrum for all its roles and since they are so easy to fabricate and to maintain they are making a real impact in the ongoing Civil War and in the Camarthen Star System too.

I also want to remind everyone that our first 15mm scale wargame title Patrol Angis is up for pre-order with offers until 1st June. You have ten days left. Its a great offer as you can get the book, the game set or the game set pro-painted and based with a 15% saving off release price and each of these includes not only the book and or miniatures but also the unique Knight Errant miniature to these codes and also the monthly free miniature which is IMP21 Planetary Militia Drill Sergeant. You can use your Reward Points to save even more off the price if you wish and in fact I encourage you to do that after all you earned them with purchases. Thanks for your time.

Ion Age Habitation Complex releases sneak peek!

Early on in the initial expansion of Humanity back to the stars within the Prydian Precinct it was noted that although large cities could be built given time in the short term a need was logged for structures which could cope with variable terrain and planetary conditions.  Designing such structures was beyond the abilities of all but the core systems who turned to the pioneers who created the ubiquitous Rubbacrete and Golglass.  These pioneers created materials which revolutionised construction and brought about massive improvement in lives all across the Precinct; The Seorc Compono Guild.

Seorc Compono Guild (SCG) brought their finest minds to focus on the challenge and created one of the miracles of the century the Habitation Dome Riser System (HDRS).  The HDRS would be standardised and shipped aboard vessels heading off world anywhere in the Precinct where they could quickly accommodate a sizeable population.   It would be more than housing though as the HDRS featured additional modules which could expand the living area and turret or assembly mounts for specialised purposes.  These purposes varied but typically they included self defence, fortification, repulsar platform landing pads, spire communications, hurwent shielding and power generation.  Added to this was a capacity for landing aircraft such as the Skylark and hardpoints that would act as fortifications.  These allowed corrals to be planned for protecting ground vehicles such as the Adder and Mullo series.  A larger and stronger built command dome was fabricated to act as a centre point in the larger HDRS settlements from where all activities could be directed. Alongside this were a series of separate spires each with a purpose such as fabrication or power generation that could be dropped easily alongside HDRS modules.

The HRDS can be found on more than fifty planets and countless vacuum environments (it is a pressurised structure system) and is utilised by everyone from the Prydian Army to the lowest of the Marcher Barons and civilian authorities too.  Single Hab Domes to small groups and hard points right up a city of a hundred thousand people all in HRDS towers.  These larger settlements make great use of connecting corridors which can allow easy access to each point in the settlement without having to venture outside.  In some locales they never got around to replacing them before the Civil War began.  Camarthan Prime was one of those places.

Quincy Portent, SGC New Glastonbury, 4330IC

The Ion Age is going big with its excellent 15mm terrain system.  From our modest beginnings a year ago with the excellent single code IAF015 Hab Dome and then through the last year with IAF015 expansions including five different top mounts, a tower module, a landing pad, a smashed and a cratered Hab Dome then the IAF040 Block House and then a group of IAF064 Geo-Shelters too we have expanded the space opera possible of your battlefield.  You can see all of these on our TERRAIN page just now.  We are now moving on and up with a whole string of releases coming up for the terrain system.  These are all works of miniature art made by the talented hands of Sam Croes our lead designer.  Curved, detailed and with a real feeling of being literally built to withstand all that an uncaring galaxy can throw at them.

We are going to be launching our pre-order offer on the following codes next week on Tuesday 18th November 2014 and from then until the end of the month (28th November) you will be able to place your order, get IMP15 Witch Knight free in every order, and save 10% on screen on every one of the codes too off release prices.  All orders will ship out end of the month world wide.  On top of that there three awesome Hab Colony bundles coming which give you three sizes of ready made settlements with a fantastic up to 25% saving off release prices!  Finally remember that when you place or have placed an order with us you have a customer account and all orders earn you Reward Points which can be used in future orders for free items and or discounts! Price 5.00GBP

All of these great buildings have at their hearts the IAF015 Hab Dome.  If you are unfamiliar with it then here are its details and its online right now:

IAF015 Hab Dome
The first 15mm resin building from the The Ion Age.  Fabricated by the Seorc Guild Hab Domes have many uses and can be found all across Prydian space.  The Hab Dome is the starting point for a whole series of resin structure system for The Ion Age in 15mm scale. The Hab Dome is the basic unit for stackable and adaptable units.  It can be used on its own or with our other terrain releases.  It is a high quality grey tone resin one piece casting which is 65mm wide and 30mm tall with a high degree of external detailing.  Suitable for use in any science fiction setting as well as The Ion Age.  Decorate your wargame table.  As always this code can be bought as a pack or as a single or select the three packs and save 10% option on the page.  Go HERE.  Price 7.00GBP.

We also have three excellent bundle offers to show too in our next post.  These three bundles each give you a full settlement to use in any 15mm science fiction wargaming setting.  An Outpost, a Base and a Colony.  Each will have its contents detailed with images but for now here are the codes and the prices with 20% off savings from list prices.

So come back here on Tuesday 18th November 2014 to pre-order, save 10%, get the monthly free miniature automatically and see the bundles too.  Thank you for making our unique space opera 15mm wargaming dreams continue to come true.

Sneak Peek - Floating in this week at The Ion Age

The Red Adder Combat Lifter takes on Canlastrian Muster
A little tease for you all.  Cometh the morrow cometh the new month of high summer and as I promised we will have a new Early Support Offer on Thursday release day this week.  The picture in this post gives the game away really since it shows one of the new codes that will be put up at 25% off list for two weeks. Following up on the success of the Adder Combat Cars and the emails that began almost instantly for hover or floating versions we have the Adder Combat Lifters.

If that just made your day then when I tell you that there will be four different types of Adder Combat Lifter and a Smashed version too...well that will just put you over the edge of a 15mm science fiction space opera smile.

Smashed Adder Combat Lifter surrounded by Nox Troopers
Finally today is your last chance to get IMP10 Malig Tank Ace for free in any order so if you want him then place your order before 9am GMT on 1st July before I show you the new free miniature the same day. HERE. Even after four weeks of looking at it on my desk it still cracks me up!

Thanks for Reading.

December 2013 and welcome 2014 for The Ion Age!

Not all but most of what we have created since September 2013!
Its time for a round up of the month on this blog and this time its a round up of the year too!  Hard to believe that we have only been in gaming existence since the end of August this year but its true.  So in two parts here is what we did in December and then a wee peek at the entire year.  I can say that although I have been in the middle of and the driving force behind The Ion Age I was still surprised at just how much we have done in a quarter of a year.  Read on!

So picking up where I left off in November 2013 we announced a new free miniature and then went on to make the following releases:

IMP04 Santa Desteria.  The monthly free miniature in all orders.  Ho, Ho, Ho!
PIA02 Matter Gateway Nox.  Our second art print in A3.
IAFL03 Retained Pistoleers.  A limited edition code.
IAF017 Ellen and Ripley.  Two character miniatures.
IAF022 Muster 1st Patrol.  10 Muster Infantry.

This was a quieter month that previous (though November and October was manic!) and we through we kept to the weekly releases we also made a festive offer which you can read about HERE.  The reception to the second poster print was rather nice and we have another one coming up soon.  There was also a storm in a tea cup over the 'pomp' of The Ion Age releasing limited 15mm codes but I enjoyed this as it backed up what I had said in the summer on my personal blog HERE.  Sam Croes outdid himself with the IAF017 pack with Commander Ellen being one of the finest 15mm female miniatures ever in my opinion.  Lastly we made an initial release which will feature heavily in 2014 and that is IAF022 Muster 1st Patrol.  Feedback from IonFan's indicated that the most desired expansion of the Muster was a dedicated scout force to face the Shia Khan Empire.  So 'Patrol' it was.  We will have more packs next year which will see command and also vehicles for the Patrol.  That was it for December and I will be sad to see Santa Desteria go; it makes me giggle every time I see it!

So what has The Ion Age done since its launch this summer?  I don't want to list everything here but I do want to provide links to the other monthly round up's so you can see the detail and I want to prove that what I said on launch day HERE has come true.

Ion Age Miniature of the Year for GBS

The Master Sculpt and the Blue Test Casting
I wanted to share with you all The Ion Age miniature / model of 2013 that most sticks in my mind.  While there have been many releases (just check back through the blog to see the fifty plus new miniatures since late August) there is one that means more to me than any other.  IAF015 Hab Dome.

The image above shows the original sculpt of the Hab Dome held in the hands of Sam Croes its designer along with a light blue test casting (which is now one of the painted ones in some of our pictures).  This was our first resin release, our first resin building.  A lot of firsts and that is why it stays with me.  I am so proud of this building.  Its unlike anything else out there on the market and its the core piece of an expanding line of parts such as the IAF015 Top Mounts.  It was evident that many hundreds of wargamers agreed with me and we are now into the third generation of molds for it.

Notice the new piece to be released in 2014?
The Hab Dome is my model of the year as it illustrates just what can be done with some effort and a new brand of unique science fiction wargaming in a medium that Alternative Armies had not worked with before.  Roll on 2014!

Customer Questions - Ordering Single Miniatures on the Ion Age Website

On the whole the order system on The Ion Age website has been understood and is working well some three months into our existance.  But there have been questions asked about the mechanics of the website and these were answered in an earlier posting here on Customer Accounts, Free Miniatures, our Mailchimp mail list, buying three packs and saving 10% and the shopping cart and so on but another question has now been asked be half a dozen customers.  With that number of asks another posting comes to the fore and this is it!

Buying Single Miniatures on The Ion Age Website
You might not always wish to purchase a full pack of miniatures...and why not, selecting what you want is all the fun!

Look at the images above.  These are screen grabs from the IAF016 Retained Post Delta on the website.  In the first picture you can see the product and I have selected the 'poses' image which is typically last in the line of images for a code.  It has a number next to every miniature in the code; this is the pose number.  In the second picture above I have clicked on the drop down purchase options list underneath the price (5.00GBP) which has a little down arrow next to 'Pack of Ten Miniatures'.  All products have this drop down menu with some being longer than others.  The drop down menu you can see in the picture above tells you that you can buy a pack, buy three packs and save 10% or choose single poses as Pose 1 through Pose 10.  By clicking on an option from the list you select it and the price changes.  You then select your quanity and add to cart.  You can then choose again or move away from that code as it will all be in your cart at the end of the choosing process.

For example I chose IAF016 Retained Post Delta.  Then looked at the poses.  I like Pose 1 a fiesty lass with a huge Anvil 888 Launcher on her shoulder so I want five of her.  I clicked on the drop down menu, selected Pose 5 at 0.50GBP each and changed the quanity to five.  I added to cart for a total of 2.50GBP and five of IAF016 pose 1.  Oh and I got my free miniature from the IAF series (December 2013 is Santa Desteria! with 2.50GBP on its own).

I hope this has been helpful to you all and as always please feel free to email me with other questions or ask them in the comments section below.
